Groups can be powerful because we heal in relationships. Group sessions provide a sense of belonging and a source of support.

Research tells us that those who attend group therapy receive equivalent benefits when compared to individual therapy and – depending on the individual – potentially some extra benefits. For many people a group setting is often just the ticket to exercising the emotional and social muscles we need to thrive in the real world, outside of our therapist’s office.

Listening, and in turn being listened to, allows us to see our own problems differently and helps us to step out of our comfort zone and place trust in the group and the process. There is a deep well of wisdom and empathy to draw from when meeting with a group who are struggling with similar issues. Simply hearing “me too” lets us know that we are not alone in our experiences. Also, while individual therapy isn’t always financially accessible for everyone, group therapy is a great way to get the positive impact of therapy for less.
